Fisher Price: Transforming Vehicle

When I was a designer at Fisher Price, I got the privilege to be deeply involved with the design ideation process, mainly sketching iterations and building prototypes of potentially interesting ones. Through a very rigorous iterative process with a number of toys, there were several prototypes ranging from Thomas the Train Engine to Nickelodeon shows like Mickey's Clubhouse, this particular idea was for the FP wood series.

Transforming Vehicle Concept:

The idea behind the transforming vehicle is to create that wonder of transformation with a simple flip, combining two types of vehicles into one entity, from tractor to race car.

Functional Prototype:

The prototype was created with the consideration of children ergonomic safety guidelines, selection of hard wood and flip mechanism for transformation with rapid prototyping tools such as foam core, hot glue, wooden dowels and wires.

Play Lab Study Report

Background

An on-site study was conducted on January 8, 2016 with six 2 year olds in the Fisher Price Play Lab.

Methodology

Children were shown that the vehicle could be transformed from a car to construction vehicle. They were then observed playing freely with the foam core transforming vehicle.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this study were:

•To observe ease of use.

•To recommend appropriate age grade.

Learnings will be used to inform design and engineering

Executive Summary

Overall, 2 year old children were able to easily transform the vehicle. They were able to transform the vehicle while on theground, on their laps, as well as while in their hands. While flipping back and forth, they used one hand to stabilize the vehicle and their other hand to flip the top.

Children tended to hold onto the front (bar) of the vehicle when carrying it around or transforming it back and forth.

Ensure front bar on vehicle is strong as children may tend to hold onto it and carry it from this location, similar to handle. Continue child observations with wood model to ensure ease of transformation with intended vehicle weight. In addition, conduct 18mo old child observations with wood model to determine appropriate age recommendation.

Observations

•2 year old children were easily able to transform the race car to the construction vehicle.

•They were able to transform the vehicle while on the ground, on their laps, as well as while in their hands.

•While flipping back and forth, they used one hand to stabilize the vehicle and their other hand to flip the top.

•Children tended to hold onto the front (bar) of the vehicle when carrying it around or transforming it back and forth.

•They enjoyed flipping it back and forth to see the different vehicles.

•Children liked looking at the various bright colors on the vehicles.

•The size was good for 2 year olds to hold, push, and carry around.

Next Steps

•Continue child observations with wood model to ensure ease of transformation with intended vehicle weight.

•Perform 18mo old child observations with wood model to determine appropriate age recommendation.

•Ensure front bar on vehicle is strong as children tend to hold onto it and carry it from this location.

•Proceed with current appearance of the construction vehicle and race car.
